When Steven Spielberg selected Lyla Foggia to handle the PR during production on his soon-to-be-blockbuster, “E. T. – The Extra-Terrestrial, it would be one of the more  unusual assignments of her Hollywood career.

“Most directors want press coverage while the cameras are rolling.  Steven, however, wanted just the opposite,” Foggia says.  “Everything about ‘E.T.’ had to remain a secret during filming – including the title and subject matter.”

Try doing that when your picture is shooting on the streets of Los Angeles, and rumors are flying that the director of “Close Encounters” is working on his follow-up masterpiece about aliens!  Even so, mission accomplished.  By the time “E.T.” wrapped, no one outside the studio and crew knew it had even shot.

From blockbusters to Oscar winners

As filmmakers and studio executives know, there is no second chance at the box office.  Everything rests on the opening weekend.  That’s why casting the right PR agency is one of the most critical below-the-line decisions you can make.

Foggia spent a decade working in the heart of the entertainment industry in such capacities as second in command of the national publicity division for TriStar Pictures and head of the international publicity department for ABC Motion Pictures, giving her an extensive knowledge of what it takes to make films successful.  She was also one of only two publicists invited to join Sherry Lansing at 20th Century Fox from Columbia Pictures, when Lansing became the first female studio chief in history.

Foggia has not only served as a core member of the top marketing teams on over 75 major motion pictures – including “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” – she spent three years on sets in charge of all of the publicity during production on such films as “Splash” and “WarGames,” as well as “E.T.”   Plus, she personally wrote the media kits responsible for helping to position such hits as “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Recent clients include the independent films , “Raising Flagg,” “Swimmers,” and “Only the Brave” – for which Foggia Public Relations produced the media kits and websites, along with test market and other campaigns.
