Reviewer Anne Marie Distefano writes about her evening at Portland’s hottest new club:
“I was skeptical at first. I mean, what’s the point of karaoke without the public humiliation?
“At the new bar Voicebox (2112 N.W. Hoyt St., 503-303-8220), groups rent small private rooms called boxes, and conduct their own karaoke parties. Like karaoke itself, this format is an Asian import.
“‘If you go to Asia, this is the dominant form of karaoke,” says owner Scott Simon. The 31-year-old first-time bar owner is a recent transplant to Portland. He grew up in New York and became enamored of the karaoke box phenomenon while working in California’s Silicon Valley.’…
