This September 12, pack up the family and head to Todos Santos Plaza in downtown Concord for another Target Pops On The Plaza magical music tour with Maestro Barry Jekowsky and the award-winning California Symphony.
This fun-filled free annual event, which last year drew more than 4000 people, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with two hours of jam-packed entertainment. The entertainment this year will include such guest artists as rising young vocalists, tenor Nephi Speer of Concord and soprano Jessica Fisher of El Cerrito, and alumni of the acclaimed Concord Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps. Target’s lovable mascot, Bullseye, will make his conducting debut, and the popular ABC7 news anchor and CSO board member Dan Ashley will serve as master of ceremonies.Once again, Maestro Jekowsky will present a sumptuous selection of classical masterpieces, Broadway scores, movie blockbuster favorites, patriotic standards and cartoon classics. Among them will be a salute to the music of Michael Jackson, selections from the Tony Award-winning “Les Mis,” and music that is out of this world – such as the themes from “Star Trek” and “Apollo 13.” The concert will also commemorate the 8th anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11, and honor the brave men and women who have given their lives to preserve our freedom.
“Every year the California Symphony looks forward to sharing the joy of music through this annual event – made possible through the generosity of our sponsors,” says Music Director Barry Jekowsky. “Please join us on this special occasion as we pay tribute to the community of Concord, home of the world-renowned Concord Records, Jazz Festival, Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, and many talented individuals.”
The 10th annual “Target Pops on the Plaza” concert is scheduled for Saturday, September12, at 6:30 pm in downtown Concord at Todos Santos Plaza (Willow Pass and Grant). This free community event is being sponsored by Target, the City of Concord, the Lesher Center Center for the Arts, Chevron, TJ Long Foundation, Discovery Builders and the Contra Costa Times. Free parking and senior and handicapped seating available.
Named “America’s Best Symphony Orchestra” by Reader’s Digest, the California Symphony was founded in 1986. The Concord concert is just part of orchestra’s on-going commitment to the communities of Contra Costa County. Its Music-in-the-Schools program – supported through grants and private donations – has provided 55,000 elementary school children with in-classroom interaction with professional musicians from the Symphony since its inception in 1992. Another 3700 young people in eight county schools will be visited three times during the upcoming academic year. For more information, please visit www.CaliforniaSymphony.org.
